NAIDOC Day Celebration at Crown Street Public School

Next week is NAIDOC Week. Since the kids will be on school holiday for two weeks beginning Friday, many schools held a celebration this week. The children have been learning about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander's culture this term.  The children performed an Aboriginal song at this morning's assembly.

Unfortunately, Coop did not seem to be singing.  I think during a rehearsal, the teacher told the kindy kids to not sing and just listen while she worked with the older kids. Coop took her at her word and didn't sing then-- or today.  It was still wonderful. And I am very proud of him.

Below is the video of the song the kids sang.

In case you are interested:
NAIDOC stands for the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians.
NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians in various fields.

Australia Museum: Creatures of the Deep

The boys and I went to the new exhibit at the Australian Museum called "Creatures of the Deep."Coop did an amazing job of really looking at everything and trying out the different activities.  Both boys were especially excited to see the Octonauts characters, one of their favorite tv shows, there as part of the children's exhibit.  Tucker was mostly interested in the play area and running around between exhibits. He did NOT like the real fish they had on display.  The blob fish was a little freaky....

If You Can't Get to the Pool....

Then make one in your living room! The boys made this swimming pool using their blankets from their beds. They then stripped down and went swimming. They even did a few fancy dives!

Ahhhhhh......

Back "dive"

Coop doing the backstroke

Rowing a boat

A Busy Weekend

Doug has been in Singapore since Thursday, but that didn't stop us from getting out and having some fun! We (the boys and I) had a crazy, busy and wonderful weekend.  We had a friend for dinner on Friday night and went out to dinner with another family on Saturday night. We went to the Jazz and Blues Festival at Darling Harbour yesterday morning and today we went to one of Coop's schoolmate's violin performance (in her home).  We spent Friday morning in our old "hood" (Bondi Junction) where Coop had a doctor's appointment and we did a little shopping for the boys for winter  clothing (although we didn't have any luck with that).  We even rearranged Coop's bedroom after which he said, "Mom, this is a dream come true!" Love that kid....

We haven't been this busy since we got here! It was really wonderful to get out with the boys and spend time with some of the nice people we have met here.  Tomorrow is a public holiday-- the Queen's Birthday-- so most of the city will be closed which will be good for us. I think we could use a little downtown before the school week begins again.
