You know what is so cool about AU? The places people call home. People from the US are from all over the globe, but they tend to be from the same places that we have become familiar with hearing over and over. Here, however, people come from places I have to use a map to find! (This doesn't really bode well for my public school education, huh?) I have met people from Thailand, New Zealand and Vietnam. The other day someone asked me if we would be going home for the holidays. I said no and then asked him the same question. His answer, "Yes, to Malaysia." He asked if I had ever been there and all I could think was how I barely knew where Malaysia is! (I do now- don't worry) Being here has opened up a whole new world for me. I love hearing the names of the places people here hail from. For me it is so exciting to come home and look at the map and discover a new place someone calls home.

I am bound and determined that the boys do not grow up with the same limited knowledge of geography that I have (although mine really was not that bad to begin with). Both boys have maps in their room. Tucker has a gorgeous map of the world complete with illustrations of animals, landmarks, places of historical importance, people and a lot more. It is hanging right above his changing table and he points out something new each time and has his favourites that he shares as well.
Map is a word he knows well already. Coop has 4 different maps in his room. He has a world map from back home where we have with our family members and their location labeled. Even Barak Obama is on there... He has a great map of Australia his nana gave him before we moved here. And my favourites-- the upside-down world map and the map where the US in NOT in the "centre of the universe," instead, Australia is! I love sharing these maps that show the world from a different perspective. Maps that show us that there are other places "out there" to be discovered. Cooper likes maps too. He is pretty good at map basics- what is land and water. He can show you where the US and Australia are. He can even point out Singapore (where his dad travels on business) and we are working on the UK, where one if his new friends is from. He even knows what a compass rose is!
So if you come across any super cool maps you know where to send them! Or, if you are so inspired, begin a collection of maps in your home. They are not only beautiful to look at, but they allow you to discover a whole bunch of
other places called home.
