The Longest Weekend Ever

The Speedway across from the hotel
So as you all know from reading this fascinating blog that we have been traveling to lovely Eastern Creek, NSW every day to care for our little Tofie dog. Well, the weekends are not covered so we have to tend to her twice a day all weekend long. We decided to stay by the quarantine station to cut down on all the travel. Well, Eastern Creek (and surroundings) has to be one of the dullest places in the world! There is literally nothing to do- wait, take that back car racing is huge. In fact, we stayed in a hotel directly across the street from Eastern Creek Speedway. It was fine. Added a little excitement for the boys, but was mostly quiet. We had only one eating option and that was the restaurant in the hotel and the food was far from good. We did take a taxi into Blacktown (the closest "big" city) one day and ate, yep, at McDonalds. The TV in the room did not have any kid friendly channels and the movie channel was not working. Thank goodness I had my computer and some DVDS. Oh, yeah, no internet either. I also had to share a small double bed with both boys. Cooper talks in his sleep and Tucker sleeps sideways! Not so peaceful. They did have a nice continental breakfast each morning which was great.

Cooper saw the above sign hanging on the door to our hotel room and said,
"Look Mom! No bakers allowed!" Ha! Ha!

The Pugs

Of course there were some good things about the weekend. The first being that we were able to spend time with the dogs. It was really comforting seeing them twice a day and getting to snuggle with them. They really doing quite well. Manzie is more stressed out than Tofie, but is handling it. Only 25 more days....

Featherdale Wildlife Park

The other positive was a local wildlife park we visited- twice. It was that good that we went back and it was that boring in the town that we had nothing else to do, but to go back. Anyway, we have now been to 4 animal "parks" including the zoo and this one was by far the best. It is called, Featherdale Wildlife Park and it had every Australian creature you could imagine. We saw wombats that were actually awake, kangaroos, wallabies, dingoes, tasmanian devils, emus, cassowaries, pelicans, snakes, lizards, a gazillion kinds of birds, flying foxes, bilbies, pademelons, penguins (yes, I know they are a kind of bird), koalas, echidnas and, Coop's favorite- goats. Again, the wallabies and kangaroos were just wandering around and we were able to pet and feed them. The first day we went the emus were wandering around too- not the most pleasant creature in the world. Coop kept yelling at them, "Stop it! Your behavior is not appropriate!"We were able to pet another koala and have a picture taken. They must have had 30 or so koalas there and we even saw them moving around (koalas sleep a lot!) on the ground and through the trees.

Cooper and the crazy emus

Tucker was a bit more interested in hiding behind signs and going around poles than interacting with the animals. The second time we went back, he showed a little more interest. Each time he gave a kangaroo some food, he would say, "Mmmm."  And, in usual Tucker fashion, he fell asleep.

Cooper... ah, my boy. He does his gardening sitting down, he paints at the easel sitting down, and he wants to sit on my lap at the beach instead of in the sand. So you can probably guess, he sat down to feed the goats and even sat down and waited for the kangaroos to come to him. And they did!

  1. That sounds totally NOT fun-- well except the wildlife park, which looks very fun. I'm sure it will be a huge relief to have the dogs home with you soon!
