Lane Cove

Last week we finally took a trip out of the city to one of Sydney's northern suburbs.  Our new friends invited us to check out Lane Cove which is about a twenty minute bus ride from the city.  We were not only excited to see our friends, but we finally were going to go OVER the Sydney Harbour Bridge. I think we traversed the bridge one other time, very early on, but do not really remember. This time we went over it for sure and even have the photos to prove it! It is a beautiful bridge and the views of the harbour are breath-taking.  Here are the pictures we took from the bus. Forgive the innards of the bus in each photo...

Our friends met us at the bus stop in Lane Cove, We walked to the centre of town where they had a huge turf "lawn" for the kids to play on. They had a great time running around, climbing stairs, chasing one another and even chasing some bubbles. We made a quick stop in a toy shop where the kids touched everything they could get their hands on!  The only thing we walked out with were 2 construction hats- hey, every little boy needs a construction hat, right? :)

After some outside playtime, we walked to our friends' house.  Despite the fact that their furniture is on a container ship in some ocean between the US and AU, it was wonderful to be in a home.  The kids ran from room to room and were thrilled with the deck and sliding glass door. They played for a long time while us moms chatted away about, well, everything!  We had a nice home-made lunch and then headed back to the bus to Sydney.

It was a great morning. It was great to be out of the city, great to experience somewhere else, great to be outdoors, but mostly just great to be with good friends.

We found a new bird, but are still trying to figure out what it is!

A Little Catch-Up

I have been really slacking on the posts lately.  Things have been super busy (yay) and Cooper got super sick (boo).  So here is a catch-up posts to get us all up-to-date.

HALLOWEEN 2011

Made from cereal boxes and paper

Caramel apples and yes those sticks are awfully long. We
had no popsicle sticks so we used chopsticks instead! Hee!

White chocolate bark with Halloween sprinkles

Homemade goldfish crackers in spooky shapes

Scarecrow Crunch

Pretzels dipped in white chocolate with Halloween sprinkles

Halloween Goodies

Tucker

Cooper

MUSIC TEACHER RUTH AND COOP
The boys just love their music teacher, Ruth. She is so good to both boys.  Tucker is literally in love with her. EVERY night before bed he says, "Ruth" in a voice filled with longing. When he plays, he gets a bag and his car and says, "Bye." I ask him where he is going and he says, "Ruth."  When we see a bus he says, "See. Ruth. Bus. Wheels. Round and round."

Cooper sharing his bird book with Ruth.

Coop playing Ruth's piano accordion

ANOTHER TRIP TO THE BOTANIC GARDENS
We went back to the gardens, again. This time we went with our friends Carrie (mom) and Eleni.  The kids discovered that the wall that separates the gardens from the harbour has little holes at various intervals (for drainage) and that the waves splash through those holes and make great puddles to play in.  Terrible grammar, forgive me... :)

Tuck and Eleni

Splash! Splash!

JUST TOO CUTE
The boys love to pretend they are dogs. Coop constructed this "bunk bed" for them to play in when they are dogs.  Love it!

Halloween Down Under

Today was Halloween down under. Well, today was 31 October down here and, for us Americans (and a few others), that means Halloween.  We all have ideas of what Halloween is like and how it should be.  We have traditions we follow each year, Halloween celebrations we attend and special foods we eat.

When I think about Halloween I smell fallen leaves, a fire burning in the fireplace and pumpkins that have been sitting out in the elements for days.  I see the colours orange and black, pumpkins and Jack-o-lanterns a-plenty, children dressed in costume toting bags of candy, families walking together with only a flashlight and glowing pumpkins to light the way and people opening their front doors to children shouting, "Trick-or-Treat!" I feel the cool, crisp, damp, PNW weather that chilled me to the bone and made me so glad to return to the warmth of  home.  And finally, I remember the sheer excitement and anticipation that filled the air on Halloween night.

So, when I think about Halloween these are the things I expect to see, hear, feel and smell. And when October 31st  rolled around down here it was in a bit of shock because it was not at all like it was supposed to be....

The weather was in the mid-70s, the sun was shining, parents were smothering their children with sunscreen and nagging them to put on their hats.  People were going about their daily business as if today was just any day.  They were dressed in shorts and t-shirts and many of them were lounging in the sun at local parks.  There were no pumpkins sitting on doorsteps or in shop windows.  The grocery store isles were not lined with bags and bags of candy and other Halloween goodies.  There were no freaky monsters and ghosts hanging from the ceilings in the local pharmacy (like Walgreens or Bartells).  There were no "day of" Halloween sales.  There was no chill in the air and the smells of blooming flowers filled the air instead of rotting leaves. This is what Halloween was like down here.

I had big plans for Halloween. I was going to make our first Halloween here the best AU has ever seen, but reality soon hit and I realised that wasn't possible.  I did my best to make it a fun and memorable day.  The boys wore their festive Halloween shirts and we delivered some candy corn to friends.  We ate some Halloween treats and played with orange and black playdough. We read some Halloween stories and played a Halloween dice game I made for the occasion.  We even had some friends stop by to share in the fun.  It wasn't the most amazing Halloween, but it didn't suck either. :)

I guess, on the bright side, we have not eaten several bags of Halloween chocolates that were meant for the Trick-or-Treaters.   There was no bribing, begging and pleading with the boys to wear that costume for "just one picture." There was no one knocking loudly on our door after the kids were tucked into bed for the night.  There will no be begging for candy every fifteen minutes for the next three weeks. I have no Jack-o-lantern that will sit on our front porch until it is rotten and stinky. And, there is no post-Halloween "clean-up."

So Halloween was a different experience this year- not what I expected, but still full of friends, food and fun.  Maybe next year I will create that amazing Halloween down under that I hoped for. Or, maybe, what we did this year will be enough and it will become our new Halloween tradition down under.
